Week 2 Recap: Saints at 49ers Empty Week 2 Recap: Saints at 49ers

Post  The Curbside Prophet Wed Oct 13, 2010 10:17 pm

In a matchup between two teams coming off strong victories in week 1, only one team could prevail. The Saints won the coin toss and chose to kick hoping to get a quick stop and set the tone early. The 49ers mounted an opening drive into opposing territory but a sack on 2nd down made them face 3rd and long. In a desperate heave for the first down, Alex Smith was intercepted and the Saints were able to take the momentum away from the home crowd. The following Saints possession featured Drew Brees leading the office to nobody’s surprise down the field till the 49ers defense dug in to protect their endzone. On a 3rd down, the 49ers blitzed Taylor Mays off the edge who hit Drew Brees as he was throwing which forced a poor through that wound up in the hands of Dashon Goldson at the 1 yard line. Alex Smith, backed up on his own 1 yard line mounted a 99 yard drive that started with a 20 yard pass to Vernon Davis on first down and ended with Ted Ginn breaking tackles for a 50 yard scamper to the endzone. 49ers go up 7-0.

The 49ers never looked back, the following series the Saints went 3 and out and were forced to punt. The ensuing 49ers drive was capped off by a 3rd down play that saw Alex Smith connect with Brian Westbrook on a corner route for a TD. 49ers lead 14-0.

The 2nd half of the game treated both players to one of the rarest plays in Madden. Backed up near their own goaline, the Saints were forced to punt and the 49ers decided to bring the heat. What happened next was a blocked punt which led to a safety.

From there, the game was never in jeopardy in the 49ers. Running the ball mostly to kill time there was little action in the later stages of the game. However, the Saints did manage to score a touchdown in the final minute of the game. The final score of the game was 26-10
