Redskins vs Cowboys
The Redskins travel to Dallas to play America's team in a highly anticipated event. Dallas swept the Redskins last year, as did every other team in the NFC East. However, this offseason the Redskins have cleaned out their closets and completly remodel their front office. There are new faces on the sidelines now, along with new faces on the field. No more Randle El returning punts, no more Cartwright returning kicks, no more 4 linemen on the field, no more 3 point stance for Andre Carter, no more last line of defense for Landry. This is a new team that features the oldest 53 man roster in the NFL. With an average age of older than 28, the Redskins traveled to Arlington to create chaos.
The first NFC East matchup of the 2010 season began with the Redskins marching downfield and scoring a touchdown off of a 23 yard pass from new Quarterback Donovan Mcnabb to veteran Chris Cooley. Although, each team displayed why offenses cringe upon hearing the news of facing either defense. After one quarter, the Redskins remained on top, 7-0.
The 2nd quarter was dominated by the Cowboys as they abused the Redskins defense for 3 touchdowns. These scores featured a 1-yard run by Felix Jones, a 27-yard pass to the high-hyped Dez Bryant, and an electrifying 80-yard pass to Miles Austin, who ranked 2nd in receiving yards last year behind Sidney Rice of the Minnesota Vikings.
The Cowboys continued their offensive dominance in the early 3rd quarter as Felix Jones scored his second rushing touchdown just two minutes into the second half. Although, this would be all the inexperienced Redskins defense would allow. The Redskins exploded down the field, first down after first down, and ended the drive with a 22-yard pass to Chris Cooley, yet again.
The Redskins did not find the endzone again until one minute left in the game. A 10-yard pass from Mcnabb to the promising Devin Thomas left the Redskins trailing 27-28 with 1:04 left in regulation. Decisions, decisions. Coach Shannahan consulted his son, Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shannahan.
"What are you thinking Kyle? Go for 2 and risk it all, or play it safe and wait for OT?"
Kyle replied, "Go for it. We've prepared for this in practice. We've waited all year for this. Haslett's defense is exhausted, lets end it here."
With the reassurance of his son, Coach Shannahan relayed the play to Donovan Mcnabb, "Goal-line FB Flat". As the play clock ran to single digits, Mcnabb hiked the ball and threw to his Full back Mike Sellers for a successful 2pt Conversion, but more importantly, the lead.
With less than a minute left in the game the Redskins kicked the ball to Dallas, and Kick Returner Kevin Ogletree fumbled the ball at the worst time possible. The ball was recovered by free agent acquisition Phillip Buchanon. The Redskins kneeled the ball and kicked a short FG to increase their lead to 32-28 with less than 20 seconds remaining. The final score remained at 32-28.
